bell choir

Gustavus Adolphus College is proud to have four handbell ensembles, which involve over 50 student musicians as ringers.  The ensembles are directed by Dr. Chad Winterfeldt, Cantor of Christ Chapel and faculty in the Department of Music.  Each group rehearses once per week for about an hour.  The Christ Chapel Ringers, the premier ensemble, is comprised of 13 members who audition for placement each year.  It is the group that performs for Christmas in Christ Chapel and often travels to area venues to perform in the spring.   The other three ensembles on campus are the Bronze, Carillon, and Disney Bells.  These groups offer a place for members to learn and practice new techniques, develop skills, and bond together in community.  All the ensembles perform 2 – 3 times per semester at the Wednesday Morning Praise service, as well as presenting a Spring Concert.  The groups perform on 5 ½ octaves of Schulmerich bells and 5 octaves of Schulmerich handchimes.

Dr. Chad WinterfeldtDr. Chad Winterfeldt is Cantor of Christ Chapel at Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minnesota, where he oversees all musical activities in the Chapel.  As a member of the Gustavus Music Department, he teaches theory, history, and courses in church music.  Trained as an organist, he has worked as a church musician since the early 1990s.  His first handbell experience was in Houston, Texas, where a devoted ensemble of seven ringers introduced him to two octaves of handbells. At Gustavus he leads four ensembles of handbell ringers – the Christ Chapel Ringers, the Gustavus Bronze, the Carillon Ringers, and the “Disney Ringers,” a group dedicated solely to the performance of music in the Disney library. Chad has served as the Minnesota South Sub-Area Chair for Handbell Musicians of America Area 7.  In his spare time, he enjoys backpacking, visiting breweries, and reading.
