Hamline Church

Music

Hamline Church has an eclectic music ministry featuring music from a variety of musical genres and traditions. We believe that music is an important means for bringing people together, and that all kinds of music are potential mediators of the sacred when combined with the other elements of worship. Musical styles we frequently pull from include sacred classical, folk, rock, virtuoso organ postludes, gospel, jazz, blues, Anglican choir anthems, pop, contemplative chant, and others! There are many opportunities to contribute musically to our church. The diversity of music is amplified by the diversity of musicians collaborating and contributing to the music program. We welcome participation in any of our ensembles or musical performances.

Chancel Choir
CHANCEL CHOIR

The Chancel Choir provides rich, rewarding musical worship experiences for all its participants. They enjoy great Christian fellowship and a family feeling with the satisfaction of making great music while aiding others in doing so. All singers are welcome in all ability levels. Requirements include the availability to sing for weekly services (Sunday 10:00 am)  and attending one weekly rehearsal (Wednesdays 7:00-8:30 pm), the ability to accept direction, to carry a tune, the willingness to learn and to give of yourself. You will be warmly welcomed into the Choir family! Four professional section leaders provide musical leadership from within the choir.

 SACRED MEETS SECULAR

We frequently include music from secular styles and other cultures in our worship. There are meaningful spiritual messages in all kinds of music that potentially resonate with the meaning of a service. We feel that including them underlines our common ties with people of all cultures while also reinforcing the main message of a service. Musicians of all different backgrounds, abilities, and instruments are encouraged to share their gifts and participate. The congregation loves hearing new styles and artistic collaborations between musicians. If you play an instrument, sing, or have an idea to perform in a service, we'd love to collaborate with you!

Handbells
HANDBELL CHOIR

The Handbell Choir is a mixed age group of intermediate to experienced level ringers. Rehearsals are normally held on Sunday mornings at 11:15 am in the Sanctuary. The Handbell Choir presents anthems in church on an occasional basis. The Handbell Choir is a great way for ringers to continue to develop their ringing and music reading skills. The group is designed so that ringers of all ages can participate and enhance their abilities. Ringing exercises are used to develop confidence, and the repertoire is chosen to teach all of the various ringing techniques used in handbell music today.

KIDS' PERFORMANCES

We also feature kids in our music program, including semi-regular performances by a kids' choir, kids' handbell choir, and individual performers. We believe that musical skills are important to teach children and that musical performances are an excellent way to integrate them into the worship experience.
