Multi-platinum recording artist to help celebrate
Hamline Church’s newly acquired grand piano
(Saint Paul, Minn.) Multi-platinum recording artist Steven C Anderson will christen Hamline Church United Methodist’s newly acquired stunning 7-foot Yamaha grand piano during a dedication concert set for 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 6, 2016, at the church, located at 1514 Englewood Ave., Saint Paul. Admission to It’s So Grand! with Steven C Anderson and Friends is free, though free-will offerings are appreciated. A reception follows the concert.
Anderson promises to play “Daybreak,” an original song title, released under his stage name Steven C. Anderson recently brought his top-selling song title to full-living color in a music video. Since it posted publicly August 30, it has shot to more than 500,000 views on Facebook and YouTube. The video captures Anderson playing “Daybreak” on his 9-foot Bösendorfer grand piano in front of the Cathedral of Saint Paul, as the sun rose over the capital city and lifted early morning shadows from the landmark church façade. “Daybreak” has been streamed more than 13 million times on Pandora and other online sites.
For the music staff at Hamline Church, Anderson was the number one choice to christen their new grand piano. Anderson began to craft his distinctive style at Hamline University, which maintains close ties to the neighboring church. Anderson graduated in 1988 with a BA in music (piano and organ performance) and had the good fortune to study extensively with the late jazz legend Manfredo Fest (Concord Jazz). Additionally, his alma mater honored his ever-expanding musical excellence by presenting him with the distinguished First Decade Award. During his undergrad days, he practiced so often and at all hours on Hamline Church’s piano and organ that he was entrusted with the keys to the building.
“We are so honored to have Steven performing for this event,” said Jan Kimes, Hamline Church member who led the effort to secure the new piano. For his part, Anderson said that this return to his roots feels like a homecoming. “I’m excited to play a magnificent instrument in this beautiful space that has meant so much to me over the years,” he said.
Joining Anderson at this concert will be vocalist Aimee Lee, lead singer of the Tex Pistols Band, and instrumentalist Nate Wilson on the violin and mandolin. Additional surprise guests from the greater Hamline community will fill out the program. Anderson plans to perform a variety of songs from his enormous catalog, including original compositions, popular covers and familiar hymns.
With the new piano in place, Hamline Church will put it to good use as part of their growing Fine Arts Series. After a lengthy search, Kimes is confident they have acquired a gem. “The gentleman who sold us this magnificent instrument said he hoped it would flourish in a beautiful church setting,” she said. The piano has spent the past 20 years in a private home. “We look forward to sharing this instrument with the local community through a wide range of events.”
